Common Use Cases

From SEO analysis to domain acquisition - domain age matters in many contexts.

SEO & Domain Authority Assessment

Quickly assess the SEO potential of any domain by checking its age. Older domains generally have more trust signals and may rank more easily for competitive keywords.

Domain Acquisition Research

Before purchasing a domain, check its age to understand its history and potential value. An aged domain with continuous registration can be a valuable digital asset.

Competitor Analysis

Check how long your competitors have been online. Domain age is one indicator of their market presence and SEO maturity, helping you benchmark your own strategy.

Backlink Profile Context

When evaluating a backlink opportunity, check the linking domain's age. Links from older, established domains carry more authority and trust than links from new domains.

Brand Protection

Monitor domain registrations for brand-related domains. Check the age of newly registered domains to identify potential cybersquatting or brand infringement.

Digital Asset Valuation

Include domain age as a factor when valuing a digital asset or online business. Older domains with clean registration histories command higher valuations.

About Domain Age

Learn how domain age is calculated and why it matters for SEO.

What Is Domain Age?

Domain age is the amount of time that has passed since a domain name was first registered. It is calculated from the domain's original registration date - not the date it was last renewed or transferred. Domain age is considered a trust signal by search engines and is one of many factors in SEO authority estimation.

How We Calculate Age

We query the official RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) registry to retrieve the domain's creation date - specifically the "registration" event date. The age is then calculated precisely in years, months, weeks, and total days from that date to the present moment.

Domain Age & SEO

While Google has stated that domain age is not a direct ranking factor, older domains tend to have accumulated more backlinks, content, and trust signals over time. A domain registered for 10+ years that has been consistently maintained is generally viewed as more authoritative than a brand new domain - all else being equal.

About the RDAP Data Source

This tool uses the Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP), the modern replacement for the legacy WHOIS protocol. RDAP provides structured, machine-readable registration data with consistent field naming. Data is fetched in real time from rdap.org, which aggregates data from multiple domain registries worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about checking domain age.

What is domain age and why does it matter?

Domain age is the time since a domain was first registered. It matters because older domains tend to accumulate more backlinks, content history, and trust signals over time. While Google has stated that domain age itself is not a direct ranking factor, it correlates strongly with other trust-building metrics that search engines do use.

How is domain age calculated?

Domain age is calculated from the original registration (creation) date of the domain. This is the date the domain was first registered, not the date of the most recent renewal or transfer. Our tool queries the RDAP registry to find this date and calculates the precise difference to the current date.

Does a domain's age change if it expires or changes owners?

The original creation date stays the same regardless of renewals, transfers between registrars, or changes in ownership. However, if a domain is allowed to expire and enters the redemption period or is deleted, its registration history may be reset if someone else registers it later.

What is RDAP and how is it different from WHOIS?

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern replacement for the legacy WHOIS protocol. It returns structured JSON data with consistent field names, supports HTTPS, and provides better privacy compliance. It is the IANA-recommended standard for querying domain registration data.

Why don't I see a creation date for some domains?

Some TLDs and registries do not expose registration dates through RDAP. This is more common with certain country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) that have limited RDAP support. In these cases, the creation date will show as "Not available".

Is the SEO authority tier a guarantee of ranking?

No. The SEO authority estimate is an indicator based on domain age only - one of many factors search engines consider. Content quality, backlink profile, technical SEO, user experience, and hundreds of other factors all play roles in actual search rankings. Use the age tier as a reference, not a guarantee.

Is my domain query stored or logged?

Your domain query is sent directly to the RDAP registry. Aback Tools does not store, log, or process your domain queries on our servers.

Is this domain age checker free to use?

Yes. Our domain age checker is 100% free with no signup, no account, and no usage limits. Check as many domains as you need.
