WHOIS Data Fields Explained
- Registrar: The company through which the domain was registered (e.g. GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare Registrar). The registrar manages the domain on behalf of the registrant.
- Created / Updated / Expires: The dates when the domain was first registered, last modified, and when the registration expires. Domains must be renewed before the expiry date or they become available for re-registration.
- Nameservers: The authoritative DNS servers for the domain, as registered with the domain registry. These control where DNS queries for the domain are directed.
- DNSSEC: Domain Name System Security Extensions - a set of cryptographic signatures that protect DNS responses from tampering. "Signed" means DNSSEC is enabled and active for the domain.
Why Contact Details May Be Redacted
Since 2018, GDPR and similar privacy regulations have required domain registrars to redact personal contact information (name, email, phone, address) from public WHOIS records for EU registrants. Many registrars now apply this redaction globally. As a result, the registrant name and email fields may show "Redacted for Privacy" or be absent entirely. This is expected behaviour and does not indicate a problem with the lookup. For legitimate legal or abuse purposes, registrars provide a contact form or email relay to reach the domain owner without exposing their personal details.
