What Is IP Geolocation?

IP geolocation is the technique of mapping an IP address to the physical geographic location of a device connected to the internet. It works by cross-referencing IP address allocation data from regional internet registries (RIRs such as ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, and AFRINIC) with ISP network data, BGP routing information, and crowd-sourced location data. The result is typically accurate to the city or region level, though exact precision can vary based on the ISP and the type of IP address.

How Our IP Geolocation Lookup Works

  1. Enter an IP Address - Type any valid IPv4 address into the input field. Our tool validates the format and checks that each octet is within the valid range (0-255).
  2. API Query - Your browser sends a request to the ip-api.com service, which looks up the IP address against its comprehensive geolocation database and returns detailed location and network information.
  3. Display Results - The geographic location is displayed in a detailed information panel and plotted on an interactive OpenStreetMap map powered by Leaflet. The IP type (public, private, loopback, etc.) is also detected locally.

What Information Is Provided?

  • Geographic Location - Country (with flag emoji), region/state, city, ZIP/postal code, latitude, and longitude coordinates.
  • Network Information - ISP name, organization, ASN (Autonomous System Number) with full AS name, and reverse DNS if available.
  • IP Classification - Whether the IP is mobile, behind a proxy/VPN/Tor, or hosted in a data centre. The IP type is also detected (public, private, loopback, etc.).
  • Interactive Map - The location is plotted on an interactive map with zoom controls, allowing you to explore the surrounding geography.

Privacy, Accuracy & Limitations

IP geolocation is generally accurate at the city level for most public IP addresses, but it is not an exact science. Mobile IP addresses may show the location of the nearest cell tower or exchange rather than the actual device location. VPNs, proxies, and Tor exit nodes will show the location of the server rather than the user. Some ISPs may have IP ranges registered in one city but actually used in another. IP geolocation is the mapping of an IP address to the physical geographic location of a connected device. It uses data from internet registries, ISPs, and other sources to estimate the country, region, city, and sometimes even the specific latitude/longitude coordinates associated with an IP address. It is commonly used for content localization, security analysis, and analytics.

IP geolocation accuracy varies by IP type and location. For most public IP addresses, it is accurate at the city level 50-80% of the time. Country-level accuracy is very high (99%+). Mobile IP addresses may show the location of the nearest cell tower or exchange point rather than the actual device. VPNs, proxies, and Tor exit nodes show the server location, not the user's actual location.

Public IP addresses are globally unique and routable on the internet - they can be looked up with geolocation tools. Private IP addresses (10.x.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x, and 192.168.x.x) are used within local networks only and are not routable on the internet. When you query a private IP, the geolocation API will return a failure since these addresses have no geographic mapping.

Currently, our IP geolocation lookup tool supports IPv4 addresses only. IPv6 support may be added in a future update. For IPv6 geolocation, many DNS-based tools and WHOIS services can provide limited location data, but coverage and accuracy are generally lower than IPv4.

An ASN is a unique number assigned to an autonomous system - a large network or group of networks under a single administrative control, typically an ISP or large organization. ASNs are used in BGP routing to exchange routing information between networks. Looking up the ASN can tell you which organization owns the IP address range.

The API returns flags indicating whether an IP is likely a proxy/VPN/Tor exit node or belongs to a hosting/data centre provider. If you see an IP marked as hosting, it means the IP belongs to a cloud provider like AWS, Google Cloud, or DigitalOcean. Proxy/VPN flags indicate the IP is likely being used to mask the user's actual location.
