About Domain Expiry Checking
How Domain Expiration Works
When you register a domain name, you purchase the right to use it for a specific period - typically 1 to 10 years. As the expiration date approaches, registrars send renewal reminders. If the domain is not renewed by the expiration date, it enters a grace period (usually 30-45 days) where you can still renew at the standard rate. After that, it enters the redemption period where renewal is possible but with additional fees. Finally, the domain is released and becomes available for anyone to register.
Why Registrar Lock Matters
Registrar lock (also called transfer lock) is a security feature that prevents unauthorised domain transfers. When enabled, the registrar blocks any transfer requests for the domain. This is a critical security measure because domain hijacking - where attackers steal a domain by transferring it to another registrar - can cause devastating damage to your online presence. Always keep registrar lock enabled unless you are actively transferring a domain.
Auto-Renew vs Manual Renewal
Auto-renew automatically charges your payment method and renews the domain before it expires. This is the safest option for critical domains. Manual renewal requires you to take action - if you forget, the domain may expire. Some registrars send multiple reminders starting 30-60 days before expiration. However, if your payment method on file fails or expires, auto-renew may not process, so it's important to verify that auto-renew is actually enabled and your payment details are current.
What This Tool Checks
The Domain Expiry Checker queries the public WHOIS database via a free API to retrieve the current registration status of a domain. It displays the expiration date, calculates days remaining, and parses domain status codes to determine registrar lock status and auto-renew configuration. Note that WHOIS data is provided by registrars and may sometimes be incomplete or delayed. Some domains with privacy protection enabled may show limited information.
