Understanding Time Tracking

What is a Time Tracker?

A time tracker is a tool that records how much time you spend on different tasks, projects, or activities. Unlike a stopwatch that simply measures elapsed time, a time tracker captures what you were working on, when you worked on it, and how long it took. Our time tracker online uses a simple start/stop mechanism with task names and optional notes. Each completed session is automatically saved to your daily log with exact start and end times. The daily and weekly summary views give you a clear picture of where your time is going - all stored locally in your browser with zero server uploads, zero signup, and zero cost.

How Our Time Tracker Works

  1. Start a Session:Type the name of the task you are working on (e.g. "Design mockup", "Code review", or "Research"), optionally add a note with more detail, then click Start. The timer begins counting in real-time, and the live display shows your elapsed time as hours:minutes:seconds.
  2. Stop When Done: When you finish the task, click Stop. The session is automatically saved with its exact start and end times, total duration, task name, and note. It appears instantly in today's session list and is persisted to localStorage for future reference.
  3. Review Your Time: Switch between Daily and Weekly views to see your tracked time. The daily view shows all sessions for a specific date with individual durations. The weekly view shows bar charts for each day of the week, letting you spot patterns at a glance. Export any view as CSV for external analysis or invoicing.

What the Time Tracker Tracks

  • Session Duration: The exact elapsed time between starting and stopping the timer, displayed in hours:minutes:seconds format. Each session duration is recorded in milliseconds for precise calculations.
  • Task Names & Notes: Every session is tagged with a task name and an optional note. This lets you group sessions by project, client, or activity, making it easy to analyse where your time is going.
  • Daily & Weekly Totals: Automatically calculated totals for each day and week. The weekly view includes visual bar charts showing how your time was distributed across the days, with the ability to drill down into any specific day.
  • All-Time Summary: Cumulative statistics showing total sessions, total tracked time, number of unique tasks, and number of unique days tracked - giving you a macro view of your time tracking history.

Privacy and Local Storage

The time tracker processes and stores all data entirely in your browser using the localStorage API. Your session data - including task names, notes, start times, end times, and durations - never leaves your device. No data is uploaded to any server, stored in any cloud database, or shared with any third party. Because everything is local, the time tracker works even when you are offline. However, clearing your browser's localStorage or site data will permanently delete all tracked sessions. To preserve your data, export your sessions as CSV periodically using the download button. The time tracker does not sync between devices - each browser maintains its own independent time tracking history.
