How the Tip Calculation Works

The calculator uses three methods to determine the best tip: (1) Flat tip of $1-2 for short trips (under $10 fare or under 5 minutes) or 10-15% of fare for standard trips. (2) Percentage tip of 15-20% of fare - standard for most Uber rides. (3) Exceptional service tip of 22%+ when all quality factors are positive and driver rating is high. Flat tipping ($1-2) works best for very short trips where a percentage would be too small to matter. For example, on a $6 short hop, 15% is only $0.90 - a flat $1-2 is more appropriate. In-app tips are convenient and ensure the driver receives the tip directly through the app. Cash tips are often preferred by drivers because they receive the full amount immediately without waiting for it to process through Uber's payment system.
