Holiday Tipping Guidelines
Standard Rule
The general rule for holiday tipping is to give the cost of one service visit to providers you see regularly. For your hairdresser, that is the cost of one haircut. For your dog groomer, it is the cost of one grooming session. This rule works for most personal care and home service providers.
Cash vs Gift
Cash is always preferred and most appreciated for holiday tips. Gift cards to coffee shops or restaurants are also acceptable for mail carriers (who cannot accept cash over $20). For long-term providers (5+ years), our calculator adds a 1.5× relationship bonus to reflect your deeper connection.
Building Staff
Doormen, supers, and building staff typically receive $20-100 each depending on your building size and your relationship. Mail carriers get $20-50 (or a gift card). Trash collectors get $10-30 each. These are typically given in addition to gifts for personal service providers.
Nannies & Caregivers
Nannies and au pairs typically receive one week\'s pay as a holiday bonus. Regular babysitters get one evening\'s pay. For weekly nannies, that is a full week\'s salary. For bi-weekly or monthly childcare, our calculator adjusts proportionally. This is the most generous category of holiday tipping.

About This Calculator
What Is This Calculator?
Our Holiday Service Provider Tip Calculator helps you plan and budget for year-end holiday tipping across all your service providers. Add providers from 20 common types - hairdressers, barbers, nail techs, massage therapists, estheticians, personal trainers, yoga instructors, dog groomers, dog walkers, house cleaners, gardeners, nannies, babysitters, au pairs, doormen, supers, mail carriers, trash collectors, pool cleaners, and tutors. Enter the cost per visit, visit frequency, and how long you have been a client to get personalized holiday tip recommendations based on industry standards.
How the Tip Calculation Works
The calculator categorizes providers into three tipping types: (1) "Cost of one visit" - for hairdressers, cleaners, groomers, and most personal service providers, the recommended holiday tip equals the cost of one regular visit, adjusted by a relationship multiplier (1.0× for under 2 years, 1.25× for 2-4 years, 1.5× for 5+ years). (2) "One week's pay" - for nannies and au pairs, the tip is one week's pay, adjusted for their visit frequency. (3) "Cash range" - for doormen, supers, and mail carriers, the tip uses the standard cash range ($20-100 depending on role) adjusted by the same relationship multiplier. The total holiday tip budget is the sum of all individual provider recommendations.
Holiday Tipping Standards
The general rule for US holiday tipping is: give the cost of one service visit to providers you see regularly. For hairdressers, that is one haircut's cost. For house cleaners, it is one cleaning's cost. For dog groomers, it is one grooming session. Nannies receive one week's pay. Doormen and building staff receive $20-100 each. Mail carriers receive $20-50 (gift cards recommended due to federal gift rules). Personal trainers receive the cost of one session. Holiday tips are typically given between Thanksgiving and Christmas, in cash whenever possible. Gift cards are appropriate for mail carriers and building staff.
