What is a Random Team Generator?
A Random Team Generator splits a list of participant names into groups (teams) using unbiased randomisation. You can either specify the number of teams you want or the size of each team, and the tool automatically distributes participants as evenly as possible using the Fisher-Yates shuffle algorithm.
How do I enter participant names?
Enter one name per line in the text area. Empty lines and extra whitespace are automatically ignored. The tool shows a live count of how many names you've entered. You can also click "Load Sample Names" to quickly populate with 20 sample names for testing.
What is the difference between "Number of Teams" and "Team Size"?
"Number of Teams" mode lets you specify exactly how many teams to create (e.g., 4 teams). Participants are distributed round-robin so teams are as balanced as possible. "Team Size" mode lets you specify how many people per team (e.g., 3 per team), and the tool creates as many teams as needed to accommodate all participants.
Are the teams truly random?
Yes. The generator uses the Fisher-Yates (Knuth) shuffle algorithm, which produces unbiased random permutations. Every possible team assignment is equally likely. Each time you click "Generate Teams" or "Reshuffle", you get a completely fresh random distribution independent of previous results.
How does balanced distribution work?
In "Number of Teams" mode, participants are distributed round-robin: person 1 to team 1, person 2 to team 2, etc., cycling through teams after the last team is reached. This guarantees that no team has more than 1 extra person compared to any other team. In "Team Size" mode, teams are filled sequentially to the specified size.
Can I export the team assignments?
Yes. After generating teams, click the "Copy Teams" button to copy the full team listing to your clipboard. The copied text includes team names, member counts, and member lists for every team, along with a total count. You can paste this into a document, email, chat, or presentation.
Can I reshuffle without changing settings?
