Understanding Inspiration Boards & Mood Boards

What is an Inspiration Board (Mood Board)?

An inspiration board, also known as a mood board, is a visual collection of ideas, colours, textures, images, and text that captures the essence of a creative concept. Designers, marketers, and creatives use mood boards to explore visual directions, communicate ideas to stakeholders, and find inspiration before starting a project. This digital mood board lets you arrange text notes, colour swatches, and uploaded images freely on a canvas.

How the Inspiration Board Works

Create one or more boards for different projects. Each board is a blank canvas where you can add items - type a note and press Enter to create a sticky note, click any colour in the palette to add a colour swatch, or upload an image from your device. Drag items to reposition them anywhere on the board, or resize them using the bottom-right handle. Select any item to bring it to the front. When your board is ready, export it as a PNG image to share or save.

Benefits of Digital Mood Boards

Unlike physical cork boards or paper collages, digital mood boards are endlessly reusable and editable. You can create multiple boards for different projects, rearrange items freely without destroying anything, and export a clean PNG image at any time. All boards are saved to your browser's localStorage, so they persist between sessions without any account or cloud storage.

Privacy, Security & Availability

All board data, including uploaded images, is stored locally in your browser using localStorage. No data is uploaded to any server, stored in any database, or shared with third parties. Uploaded images are converted to data URLs and stored within the localStorage (capped by the browser's ~5-10 MB quota). The tool is completely free with no signup required and works offline after the initial page load.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Inspiration Board

How many boards can I create?
There is no hard limit on the number of boards you can create. However, each board and its items are stored in your browser's localStorage, which typically allows up to 5-10 MB of data. Image-heavy boards consume more storage. You can manage this by deleting unused boards or keeping image sizes reasonable.
Can I edit a note after adding it?
Yes. Double-click any note card to enter edit mode. A text area appears with the current content - make your changes and click the checkmark button or press Shift+Enter to save. Click the X button or click elsewhere to discard changes.
How do I move items on the board?
Click and drag any item to reposition it on the board. Items snap to a 10px grid for clean alignment. The item you drag comes to the front automatically. Selected items show a blue border and ring for visual feedback.
Can I resize items?
Yes. Hover over any item and you will see a resize handle in the bottom-right corner. Click and drag the handle to resize the item. The minimum size is 60×60 pixels. This works for notes, colour swatches, and images.
How do I export my board as an image?
Click the "Export PNG" button in the toolbar. The tool renders all items on your board onto a canvas, compositing notes, colour swatches, and images together, then downloads the result as a PNG file. The export respects each item's position, size, and z-index order.
What happens to my boards when I clear browser data?
All boards are stored in your browser's localStorage. If you clear your browsing data (cookies, cache, localStorage), your boards will be permanently deleted. To preserve your work, export your boards as PNG images before clearing browser data.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes, the Inspiration Board (Mood Board) is completely free with no signup required, no premium features, and no limits on how many boards or items you can create. Everything runs locally in your browser with no server-side processing.
Are uploaded images stored on any server?
No. Uploaded images are converted to data URLs (base64-encoded strings) and stored entirely in your browser's localStorage. They are never uploaded to any server, cloud storage, or third-party service. This means your images are private, but it also means large images consume more of your browser's storage quota.
