It enforces the Law of Conservation of Mass - matter cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction.
How do I enter a chemical equation?

Elements are case-sensitive (capitalize the first letter: H for hydrogen, He for helium). Use parentheses for polyatomic groups, e.g., Ca(OH)2 for calcium hydroxide. Example: H2 + O2 -> H2O.
What types of reactions can this balancer handle?

How does the balancing algorithm work?
The tool uses a dual approach. For small equations (up to 6 compounds), it performs a combinatorial search trying coefficient combinations from 1 to 15 for all but the last compound, then solves for the final coefficient. For more complex equations, it uses Gaussian elimination on the element-compound matrix to find the null space. Both methods find the smallest integer coefficients.
Can it balance redox reactions with electrons?
This tool balances equations based on atom conservation only. It does not balance charge or account for electron transfer in redox reactions. For complete redox balancing, you would need to use the half-reaction method separately. The tool is best suited for molecular equations where atom counting is sufficient.
What happens if the tool cannot balance my equation?
If the tool cannot balance your equation, double-check the formula syntax: element symbols must start with a capital letter (Fe not fe), check parentheses are properly closed (Ca(OH)2 not Ca(OH2), and verify all elements on the left appear on the right. Very complex equations with many unique elements may exceed the algorithm's search limits.
