When a restaurant bill says "service compris" (France), "servizio incluso" (Italy), or "servicio incluido" (Spain), it means a service charge is already added to the price of your meal - usually around 12.5-15%. In these cases, you are not expected to leave an additional tip, though rounding up or leaving small change (€1-5) for exceptional service is appreciated. Cash is preferred for tips in most European countries, especially in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, where you tell the server the total amount you want to pay (bill + tip) when handing over cash or your card. Card tipping is becoming more common, especially in tourist areas, but not all POS terminals support adding a tip. When in doubt, keep small euro coins and notes handy for tipping.
