Understanding Running Pace Calculations
What is a Running Pace Calculator?
A running pace calculator is a tool that solves the relationship between three running variables: distance, time, and pace. Given any two of these values, the calculator computes the third. Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance (e.g. 5:30 per kilometre or 8:51 per mile) and is the standard metric used by runners worldwide. Our running pace calculator supports both kilometres and miles, provides automatic split times for all major race distances, and converts between pace and speed (km/h and mph) — all running locally in your browser with no data sent to any server.
How Our Running Pace Calculator Works
- 1. Select Your Calculation Mode: Choose what you want to calculate: "Find Pace" (enter distance + time), "Find Finish Time" (enter distance + pace), or "Find Distance" (enter time + pace). Select km or miles as your distance unit.
- 2. Enter Your Known Values: Fill in the two known values. Use the race distance presets (5K, 10K, Half, Marathon) for quick entry. Time is entered as hours, minutes, and seconds; pace is entered as minutes and seconds per km or mile.
- 3. View Results and Split Times: Click Calculate to see your pace, finish time, and distance, plus speed in both km/h and mph. Split times for all major race distances up to your total distance are shown automatically.
Running Pace Formulas Explained
- Find Pace: Pace (min/unit) = Total Time ÷ Distance. For example, running 10 km in 50:00 gives a pace of 5:00 /km. Pace is expressed as minutes and seconds per kilometre or mile.
- Find Finish Time: Finish Time = Distance × Pace. For example, running a half marathon (21.1 km) at 5:30 /km gives a finish time of 1:56:05. This is the most common use case for race planning.
- Find Distance: Distance = Total Time ÷ Pace. For example, running for 1 hour at 6:00 /km covers 10 km. This is useful for planning training runs of a specific duration.
- Speed ↔ Pace Conversion: Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ Pace (min/km). Pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ Speed (km/h). For example, a pace of 5:00 /km equals 12 km/h. Our running pace calculator shows both speed and pace in the results.
What the Running Pace Calculator Shows
- Pace: Your running pace expressed as minutes and seconds per kilometre or mile.
- Finish Time: Your total race or run time in hours, minutes, and seconds.
- Distance: The total distance covered, in your chosen unit.
- Speed: Your running speed in both km/h and mph for treadmill reference.
- Split Times: Projected finish times at 1K/1mi, 5K, 10K, half marathon, and full marathon distances — automatically calculated from your pace.

Frequently Asked Questions About Running Pace Calculator
A running pace calculator is a tool that solves the relationship between distance, time, and pace. Given any two values, it calculates the third. Our running pace calculator supports three modes — find pace, find finish time, and find distance — with automatic split times for all major race distances, running instantly in your browser.
Running pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance, expressed as minutes:seconds per kilometre or mile (e.g. 5:30 /km). Speed is the inverse — distance covered per unit of time (e.g. 10.9 km/h). Runners typically use pace because it directly tells you how fast to run each kilometre or mile. Our running pace calculator shows both.
Select "Find Pace" mode, enter your distance and total time, then click Calculate. For example, running 10 km in 50:00 gives a pace of 5:00 /km. The formula is: Pace = Total Time ÷ Distance.
Select "Find Finish Time" mode, click the "Marathon" preset to set the distance (42.195 km or 26.2 mi), enter your target pace, then click Calculate. For example, a pace of 5:41 /km gives a marathon finish time of approximately 4:00:00.
Split times show your projected finish time at each major race distance checkpoint — 1K, 5K, 10K, half marathon, and full marathon. They are calculated by multiplying your pace by each distance. Our running pace calculator generates split times automatically for all distances up to your total distance.
Use the speed conversion in the results: Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ Pace (min/km). For example, a pace of 6:00 /km equals 10 km/h on a treadmill. Our running pace calculator shows both km/h and mph in the results for easy treadmill reference.
