Understanding Weight and Mass Conversion
What is Weight / Mass Conversion?
Weight and mass conversion is the process of expressing a measurement in one unit as an equivalent value in another unit. While mass is a fundamental property of matter (measured in kg in the SI system), weight is the force exerted by gravity on that mass. In everyday use, the terms are used interchangeably. The world uses two main weight systems: the metric system (mg, g, kg, tonne) used by most countries, and the imperial / avoirdupois system (oz, lb, stone, short ton) used primarily in the US and UK. Specialised systems like the troy system (troy oz, troy lb) are used for precious metals, and the carat is used for gemstones.
How the Weight Converter Works
- Select Your Units: Choose the source unit (From) and target unit (To) from the dropdowns, or click a quick-convert button for the most popular conversions like kg → lbs or g → oz.
- Enter a Value: Type any weight value in the input field. The all-at-once conversion table updates instantly as you type — showing all 13 units simultaneously with no button press required.
- Get Your Result: Click Convert for the primary from → to result card, or read any value directly from the reactive conversion table. All calculations use kilogram (kg) as the base unit for maximum precision.
What Weight Units Are Supported?
- Metric units: Milligram (mg), Gram (g), Kilogram (kg), Metric Ton / Tonne (t)
- Imperial / avoirdupois units: Ounce (oz), Pound (lb), Stone (st), Short Ton / US Ton (ton), Long Ton / UK Ton (LT)
- Precious metals & gemstones: Troy Ounce (troy oz), Troy Pound (troy lb), Carat (ct), Grain (gr)
- Total: 13 weight and mass units covering all common measurement systems used worldwide.
Troy vs Avoirdupois — Important Difference
The troy system and the avoirdupois system use different pound and ounce definitions. A troy ounce = 31.1035 g, while an avoirdupois ounce = 28.3495 g — about 10% lighter. Similarly, a troy pound = 373.242 g (12 troy oz), while an avoirdupois pound = 453.592 g (16 oz). The troy system is used exclusively for precious metals (gold, silver, platinum) and gemstones. When buying or selling gold, always use troy ounces — not regular ounces. The carat used for gemstones (1 ct = 0.2 g) is different from the karat used for gold purity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Weight Converter
A weight converter is a tool that converts a measurement from one weight or mass unit to another — for example, kilograms to pounds, grams to ounces, or stone to kilograms. Our weight converter supports 13 units including mg, g, kg, tonne, oz, lb, stone, short ton, long ton, grain, carat, troy oz, and troy lb, with an all-at-once conversion table that updates as you type.
1 pound (lb) = 0.453592 kilograms (kg). Conversely, 1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds. To convert pounds to kg, multiply by 0.453592. To convert kg to pounds, multiply by 2.20462. For example, 70 kg = 154.32 lbs, and 150 lbs = 68.04 kg.
1 avoirdupois ounce (oz) = 28.3495 grams (g). To convert ounces to grams, multiply by 28.3495. To convert grams to ounces, divide by 28.3495 (or multiply by 0.035274). Note: this is the standard (avoirdupois) ounce used in cooking and everyday measurements — not the troy ounce used for precious metals.
1 stone (st) = 6.35029 kilograms (kg). The stone is a unit of weight used primarily in the UK and Ireland for body weight. 1 stone = 14 pounds. For example, a person weighing 11 stone = 69.85 kg = 154.32 lbs. To convert stone to kg, multiply by 6.35029.
A short ton (US ton) = 2,000 pounds = 907.185 kg. A long ton (UK ton) = 2,240 pounds = 1,016.05 kg. A metric ton (tonne) = 1,000 kg = 2,204.62 lbs. The short ton is used in the United States, the long ton in the UK for some industries, and the metric ton (tonne) is the international standard. The long ton is about 12% heavier than the short ton.
A troy ounce = 31.1035 grams — about 10% heavier than a standard (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.3495 g. The troy ounce is the standard unit for precious metals including gold, silver, and platinum. When you see gold prices quoted per ounce, they always refer to troy ounces. 1 troy pound = 12 troy ounces = 373.242 g, compared to 1 avoirdupois pound = 16 oz = 453.592 g.
To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply by 2.20462. Formula: lbs = kg × 2.20462. Examples: 1 kg = 2.205 lbs, 10 kg = 22.046 lbs, 70 kg = 154.32 lbs, 100 kg = 220.46 lbs. To convert lbs back to kg, divide by 2.20462 (or multiply by 0.453592). Use the quick-convert button "kg → lbs" in our weight converter for instant results.
