Understanding VAT Calculations
What is VAT?
VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax levied on goods and services at each stage of the supply chain. A VAT calculator computes either the VAT amount to add to a net price (VAT-exclusive) or extracts the VAT component from a price that already includes VAT (VAT-inclusive). For example, at 20% UK VAT: a £100 net price becomes £120 gross (add £20 VAT), and a £120 VAT-inclusive price has a £100 net with £20 VAT embedded. Our VAT calculator handles both directions instantly and supports any rate from 0% to 10,000%, covering VAT, GST, HST, and sales tax systems worldwide.
How Our VAT Calculator Works
- 1. Enter Your Amount: Type the price you want to calculate VAT on. For "Add VAT" mode, enter the net (pre-VAT) price. For "Remove VAT" mode, enter the gross (VAT-inclusive) price. All processing happens locally in your browser — your data never leaves your device.
- 2. Choose a VAT Rate: Select from 17+ global presets covering UK VAT, EU VAT, UAE VAT, Australian GST, and more — or enter a custom rate. Then choose your currency and whether to add VAT to the price or remove it from a VAT-inclusive amount.
- 3. Get Instant Results: Click Calculate VAT to see the net price, VAT amount, and gross price with a full breakdown. A multi-rate comparison table shows the VAT and gross price at 12 common rates for quick cross-jurisdiction reference.
VAT Calculation Formulas
- Add VAT (VAT-exclusive): VAT Amount = Net Price × (Rate ÷ 100). Gross Price = Net Price + VAT Amount. Example: £100 × 20% = £20 VAT → £120 gross.
- Remove VAT (VAT-inclusive): Net Price = Gross Price ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). VAT Amount = Gross Price − Net Price. Example: £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net → £20 VAT extracted.
- Effective VAT Rate: The effective rate is (VAT Amount ÷ Gross Price) × 100. For a 20% VAT rate, the effective rate on the gross price is 16.67% — this is why you cannot simply multiply a VAT-inclusive price by 20% to find the VAT.
- Custom Rates: Our VAT calculator accepts any rate from 0% to 10,000%, supporting zero-rated goods, reduced rates, luxury tax scenarios, and any jurisdiction-specific rate worldwide.
VAT Rates by Country
VAT rates vary significantly by country and product category. The UK standard VAT rate is 20%, with a reduced rate of 5% for domestic fuel and children's car seats, and 0% for most food and books. In the EU, standard rates range from 17% (Luxembourg) to 27% (Hungary). Germany applies 19% VAT, France 20%, and Scandinavia 25%. The UAE and Bahrain apply 5% VAT.Saudi Arabia raised its VAT to 15% in 2020. Australia and Japan apply 10% GST/consumption tax. Our VAT calculator includes presets for all major jurisdictions and a custom rate option for any other rate.

Frequently Asked Questions About VAT Calculator
What is a VAT calculator?
A VAT calculator computes the VAT amount and final price for any net price and VAT rate. It supports both adding VAT to a net price (VAT-exclusive) and extracting VAT from a VAT-inclusive price (VAT-inclusive). Our VAT calculator includes presets for UK, EU, UAE, Australia, and 17+ other jurisdictions.
How do I add VAT to a price?
Enter your net (pre-VAT) price, select your VAT rate (e.g. 20% for UK standard), choose "Add VAT to price", and click Calculate VAT. The VAT calculator instantly shows the VAT amount and the gross (VAT-inclusive) price. Formula: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate/100).
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Enter the gross (VAT-inclusive) price, select your VAT rate, choose "Remove VAT from price", and click Calculate VAT. The formula is: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate/100). For example, £120 at 20% VAT gives a £100 net price and £20 VAT. Never multiply the gross price by the VAT rate directly — that gives the wrong answer.
What is the difference between net and gross price?
The net price (also called the VAT-exclusive price) is the price before VAT is added. The gross price (also called the VAT-inclusive price) is the final price the customer pays, which includes VAT. Our VAT calculator clearly shows both values along with the VAT amount for any calculation.
What VAT rates are supported?
Our VAT calculator includes presets for UK VAT (20%, 5%, 0%), EU VAT (Germany 19%, Hungary 27%, Scandinavia 25%), UAE/Bahrain VAT (5%), Saudi Arabia VAT (15%), Australia GST (10%), Philippines VAT (12%), Thailand VAT (7%), Mexico VAT (16%), Canada HST (13%), and more. A custom rate option supports any rate from 0% to 10,000%.
Why can't I just multiply the gross price by the VAT rate to find the VAT?
Because the VAT rate applies to the net price, not the gross price. If the gross price is £120 and VAT is 20%, the VAT is NOT £120 × 20% = £24. The correct calculation is £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net, so VAT = £20. The effective VAT rate on the gross price is 16.67%, not 20%. Our VAT calculator handles this correctly automatically.
Is this VAT calculator free to use?
Yes! Our VAT calculator is 100% free with no signup, no ads, and no usage limits. Calculate VAT as many times as you need — completely free, forever.
Is my financial data safe when using this VAT calculator?
Absolutely. All VAT calculations happen locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your prices and financial data are never sent to any server, ensuring complete privacy every time you use our VAT calculator online.
What does the VAT comparison table show?
The comparison table shows the VAT amount and gross price at 12 common rates (5%, 7%, 10%, 12%, 15%, 16%, 19%, 20%, 21%, 23%, 25%, 27%) for your entered amount. The currently selected rate is highlighted, making it easy to compare VAT burdens across different jurisdictions at a glance.
