Common Use Cases for ROI Calculator

Stock & Investment Portfolio Analysis

Investors use the ROI calculator to measure the return on individual stocks, mutual funds, or their entire portfolio. The annualized ROI mode converts a multi-year holding period return into a per-year figure for easy comparison with benchmarks like Nifty 50 or S&P 500.

Real Estate Investment Evaluation

Property investors use the ROI calculator to compare rental yield and capital appreciation across different properties. Entering the purchase cost as investment and rental income plus appreciation as final value gives an instant ROI percentage for any property.

Business & Marketing Campaign ROI

Marketing teams and business owners use the ROI calculator to measure the return on ad spend, product launches, and business initiatives. Entering campaign cost and revenue generated gives an instant ROI that justifies or challenges budget decisions.

Startup & Venture Capital Analysis

Founders and investors use the ROI calculator to evaluate startup investment returns. The return multiple (final value ÷ investment cost) is a key metric in venture capital — the calculator shows both ROI percentage and the money multiplier side by side.

Comparing Investment Alternatives

Investors comparing fixed deposits, SIPs, real estate, and equities use the annualized ROI mode to put all options on the same per-year basis. The comparison table shows ROI at 5%, 10%, 15%, 25%, and 50% return levels for instant benchmarking.

Social Impact & CSR Measurement

NGOs, CSR teams, and impact investors use the SROI mode to quantify the social and environmental return on their programmes. Entering the monetised social value and programme cost gives an SROI ratio — for example, 3.5x means every ₹1 invested generates ₹3.50 in social value.

Understanding ROI — Return on Investment

What is ROI?

ROI (Return on Investment) is a performance metric that measures the efficiency or profitability of an investment relative to its cost. It is expressed as a percentage and calculated by dividing the net profit (revenue minus costs) by the investment cost, then multiplying by 100. A positive ROI means the investment generated more than it cost; a negative ROI means a loss. Our browser-based ROI calculator supports three modes — Standard ROI, Annualized ROI, and Social ROI (SROI) — covering everything from stock returns to social impact measurement.

How Our ROI Calculator Works

  1. Select a Mode: Choose Standard ROI for a simple percentage return, Annualized ROI to convert a multi-year return into a per-year figure, or Social ROI (SROI) to measure social and environmental impact. You can also enter the final value instead of net profit — the ROI calculator computes net profit automatically.
  2. Enter Your Figures: Input the investment cost and net profit (or final value). For Annualized ROI, add the holding period in years. For SROI, add the monetised social or environmental value generated by the investment.
  3. Instant Browser-Based Calculation: Click Calculate ROI. The calculator applies the correct formula entirely in your browser — your financial data is never sent to any server.

ROI Formulas Explained

  • Standard ROI: ROI = (Net Profit ÷ Investment Cost) × 100. Net Profit = Final Value − Investment Cost. This is the most widely used ROI formula across business, marketing, and investing.
  • Annualized ROI: Annualized ROI = (1 + ROI/100)^(1/n) − 1, where n is the number of years. This converts a total return over multiple years into a per-year compound rate, making it comparable to annual benchmarks like FD rates or index fund returns.
  • Social ROI (SROI): SROI Ratio = Social Value ÷ Investment Cost. Social value is the monetised estimate of social, environmental, or community benefit generated. An SROI of 3.5x means every ₹1 invested creates ₹3.50 in social value.
  • Return Multiple: Final Value ÷ Investment Cost. A 2x multiple means the investment doubled; a 0.8x multiple means a 20% loss. This is commonly used in venture capital alongside ROI percentage.

Important Notes

ROI does not account for the time value of money — a 50% ROI over 10 years is far less impressive than 50% over 1 year. Use Annualized ROI to compare investments with different holding periods. ROI also does not account for risk — two investments with the same ROI may have very different risk profiles. For a more complete picture, consider metrics like IRR (Internal Rate of Return), NPV (Net Present Value), or Sharpe Ratio alongside ROI. Our ROI calculator is a quick estimation tool — always consult a qualified financial advisor for investment decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions About ROI Calculator

An ROI calculator computes the Return on Investment percentage from an investment cost and net profit. Our ROI calculator supports three modes — Standard ROI, Annualized ROI (per-year return), and Social ROI (SROI ratio) — with a formula display, return multiple, and comparison table. Everything runs locally in your browser with no signup required.

Standard ROI = (Net Profit ÷ Investment Cost) × 100. Net Profit = Final Value − Investment Cost. For example, if you invest ₹1,00,000 and receive ₹1,25,000, your net profit is ₹25,000 and your ROI is 25%. A negative net profit gives a negative ROI, indicating a loss.

Standard ROI is the total return over the entire investment period, regardless of how long it took. Annualized ROI converts that total return into a per-year compound rate using the formula: (1 + ROI)^(1/n) − 1, where n is the number of years. Annualized ROI is more useful for comparing investments with different holding periods.

Social ROI (SROI) measures the social, environmental, or community value generated per unit of investment. SROI Ratio = Social Value ÷ Investment Cost. An SROI of 3.5x means every ₹1 invested creates ₹3.50 in social value. SROI is used by NGOs, CSR teams, and impact investors to quantify non-financial returns.

A "good" ROI depends on the investment type, risk level, and time horizon. For stock market investments, 10–15% annualized ROI is generally considered good (roughly matching long-term index fund returns). For business investments, 20–30% ROI is often targeted. For real estate, 8–12% annual ROI is typical. Our ROI calculator shows a rating (Low, Moderate, Good, Very Good, Exceptional) alongside the ROI percentage.

Yes. Use the "Final Value" toggle in the ROI calculator to enter the total value at the end of the investment instead of the net profit. The calculator automatically computes net profit as Final Value − Investment Cost and then calculates ROI. This is useful for stock investments where you know the purchase price and current market value.

No. Standard ROI is a nominal, pre-tax return. It does not account for inflation, capital gains tax, or transaction costs. For inflation-adjusted returns, use the Real Return Calculator. For after-tax returns, subtract the applicable tax rate from your net profit before entering it into the ROI calculator.

Absolutely. All ROI calculations run entirely in your browser. Your investment amounts, profit figures, and financial details are never sent to any server, stored in a database, or tracked. Everything stays completely private on your device.
