Understanding Percentage Change

What is Percentage Change?

Percentage change measures how much a value has increased or decreased relative to its original value, expressed as a percentage. The formula is: % change = ((New − Old) / |Old|) × 100. A positive result indicates an increase; a negative result indicates a decrease. For example, if a price rises from $80 to $100, the percentage change is ((100 − 80) / 80) × 100 = +25%. Our percentage change calculator computes this instantly and also shows the absolute change and the multiplier (new/old ratio).

How Our Percentage Change Calculator Works

  1. 1. Select a Mode:Choose "Calculate % Change" (old + new → %), "Find New Value" (old + % → new), or "Find Original Value" (new + % → old). Our percentage change calculator adapts the inputs to your selection.
  2. 2. Enter Your Values: Type the known values in the input fields. Use negative percentages for decreases (e.g. −10 for a 10% decrease). All processing happens locally in your browser — your data never leaves your device.
  3. 3. Get Instant Results: Click Calculate and the percentage change calculator shows the percentage change, absolute change, multiplier, direction indicator, and a step-by-step algebraic breakdown.

The Three Percentage Change Formulas

  • Calculate % Change: % change = ((New − Old) / |Old|) × 100. The denominator uses the absolute value of the old value to handle negative starting values correctly. If the old value is 0, the percentage change is mathematically undefined (division by zero).
  • Find New Value: New = Old × (1 + % change / 100). For example, a 25% increase on 80: New = 80 × 1.25 = 100. A 20% decrease on 100: New = 100 × 0.80 = 80.
  • Find Original Value: Old = New / (1 + % change / 100). This reverses the percentage change. For example, if a price is now $120 after a 20% increase, the original price was 120 / 1.20 = $100.
  • Common Mistake — Asymmetry: A 25% increase followed by a 25% decrease does NOT return to the original value. If you start at 100, increase by 25% to 125, then decrease by 25%, you get 125 × 0.75 = 93.75 — not 100. This is because the percentage is applied to different base values. Our percentage change calculator always uses the correct base for each calculation.

Percentage Change vs Percentage Points

Percentage change and percentage points are different concepts that are often confused. Percentage change is relative — it measures the change as a fraction of the original value. Percentage points measure the absolute arithmetic difference between two percentages. For example, if an interest rate rises from 5% to 7%, that is a 2 percentage point increase, but a 40% percentage change ((7 − 5) / 5 × 100 = 40%). Our percentage change calculator computes the relative percentage change — use it when you want to know how much something changed relative to its starting value.

Frequently Asked Questions About Percentage Change Calculator

A percentage change calculator computes how much a value has increased or decreased relative to its original value, expressed as a percentage. Our percentage change calculator supports three modes: calculate % change from old and new values, find the new value after a % change, and find the original value before a % change.

% change = ((New − Old) / |Old|) × 100. A positive result is an increase; a negative result is a decrease. For example, 80 to 100: ((100 − 80) / 80) × 100 = +25%. For 100 to 75: ((75 − 100) / 100) × 100 = −25%.

Select "Find New Value" mode, enter the original value and 20 as the percentage change, then click Calculate. The formula is: New = Old × (1 + 20/100) = Old × 1.20. For example, a 20% increase on 50 gives 50 × 1.20 = 60.

Select "Find Original Value" mode, enter the new value and the percentage change, then click Calculate. The formula is: Old = New / (1 + % change / 100). For example, if a price is $120 after a 20% increase, the original was 120 / 1.20 = $100.

Because the percentages are applied to different base values. Starting at 100: +25% gives 125, then −25% of 125 gives 93.75 — not 100. The decrease is applied to the higher value (125), so it removes more in absolute terms than the increase added.

When the old value is 0, the percentage change is mathematically undefined (division by zero). Our percentage change calculator detects this and shows the absolute change instead, with a note that the percentage change is undefined.

Percentage change is relative (change / original × 100). Percentage points are the absolute arithmetic difference between two percentages. If a rate goes from 5% to 7%, that is 2 percentage points but a 40% percentage change.
