Hidden Sheet/Content Detector

Office documents (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX) are actually ZIP archives containing XML files and resources. The detector uses JSZip to open the file as a ZIP archive and systematically reads each XML file inside. It searches for specific XML attributes and elements that indicate hidden content - such as state="hidden" on Excel worksheet tags, show="0" on PowerPoint slide tags, w:vanish on Word text runs, and w:ins/w:del for tracked changes. Each finding is categorized by type and assigned a risk level based on its severity.

Absolutely. All document processing is performed entirely within your browser using the JSZip library. Your files are never uploaded to any server, transmitted over the network, or stored in the cloud. You can verify this by checking your browser developer tools network tab - no requests are made when scanning documents. This makes the tool safe for scanning sensitive business documents, legal files, or any confidential data.

Excel worksheets have three visibility states: visible, hidden, and very hidden. A hidden sheet can be restored by right-clicking any sheet tab and selecting "Unhide". A very hidden sheet (state="veryHidden") cannot be unhidden through the Excel user interface at all - it can only be restored using VBA code or by editing the XML directly. Very hidden sheets are often used to hide sensitive data or lookup tables and represent a higher privacy risk than regular hidden sheets.

Yes. Hidden text in Word documents is formatted using the "hidden" font effect, which is stored in the document XML as a w:vanish property on individual text runs (w:r elements). Our detector scans the document.xml file for all w:vanish properties and reports the total number of hidden text runs found. Hidden text is invisible when viewing or printing the document normally but remains in the file and can be revealed by toggling the "Show/Hide" formatting marks in Word.

The hidden content detector supports the three main Office Open XML formats: DOCX (Word documents), XLSX (Excel spreadsheets), and PPTX (PowerPoint presentations). Older binary formats like DOC, XLS, and PPT are not supported because they use a completely different file structure that cannot be opened as a ZIP archive. For these older formats, you would need to convert them to the modern XML-based format using Microsoft Office or LibreOffice first.

This tool is a read-only detector - it identifies and reports hidden content but does not modify your document. To remove specific hidden elements like hidden worksheets or tracked changes, you should open the document in Microsoft Office, LibreOffice, or Google Workspace and use their built-in tools to unhide or delete the content.

Info findings (blue) are informational items like comments or different headers/footers that may or may not need attention. Warning findings (amber) are more significant - hidden worksheets, hidden slides, hidden text, and tracked changes that should typically be reviewed before sharing. Critical findings (red) represent the highest risk, such as very hidden Excel sheets that cannot be unhidden through the UI, and VBA macros that can execute code. Critical findings should always be investigated before sharing documents externally.

Yes. The detector checks for the presence of VBA macro files (vbaProject.bin) inside the Office document ZIP archive. When macros are detected, they are reported as a Warning-level finding. However, our tool does not analyze the macro source code itself - it only detects whether macros are present.
