Understanding Roman Numerals

What is a Roman Numeral Converter?

A Roman numeral converter translates between the Arabic number system (1, 2, 3…) and the Roman numeral system (I, II, III…). Roman numerals use seven symbols — I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1000) — combined using additive and subtractive notation. Our roman numeral converter supports the standard range of 1–3,999 as well as an extended range up to 3,999,999 using parenthesis notation for thousands. All conversion runs instantly in your browser with no server upload required.

How Our Roman Numeral Converter Works

  1. Enter Your Numbers or Roman Numerals: Type one value per line in the input panel. For Arabic to Roman conversion, enter integers like 1776 or 2025. For Roman to Arabic, enter numerals like MDCCLXXVI or MMXXV.
  2. Instant Browser-Based Conversion: The roman numeral converter processes each line immediately in your browser. Valid inputs show the converted result; invalid inputs show a clear error message explaining what went wrong.
  3. Copy, Download, or Swap: Copy all results to clipboard, download as a text file, or click Swap to send the converted output back to the input for chained conversions.

Roman Numeral Rules and Notation

  • Additive Notation: Symbols are generally written from largest to smallest, left to right, and their values are added together. For example, VIII = 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8.
  • Subtractive Notation: When a smaller symbol precedes a larger one, it is subtracted. The six valid subtractive pairs are IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400), and CM (900).
  • Repetition Limit: I, X, C, and M can be repeated up to three times consecutively. V, L, and D are never repeated. This limits the standard range to 1–3,999 (MMMCMXCIX).
  • Extended Range: Numbers above 3,999 use parenthesis notation where a symbol in parentheses is multiplied by 1,000 — for example, (V) = 5,000, (X) = 10,000, (M) = 1,000,000. This extends the range to 3,999,999.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Roman Numeral Converter

A Roman numeral converter translates between Arabic integers (1, 2, 3…) and Roman numerals (I, II, III…). Our converter supports both directions, handles batch conversion of multiple values at once, and runs entirely in your browser with no server upload required.

The standard Roman numeral range is 1–3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). Our converter also supports an extended range up to 3,999,999 using parenthesis notation — for example, (V) = 5,000 and (M) = 1,000,000. Roman numerals have no representation for zero or negative numbers.

Enter one number or Roman numeral per line in the input panel. The converter processes all lines simultaneously and displays each result inline. Invalid inputs show a clear error message while valid inputs are converted normally.

Absolutely. All conversion happens 100% client-side in your browser. Nothing is ever sent to any external server, and your data never leaves your device. You can safely convert sensitive numbers like years, serial numbers, and reference codes.

Roman numerals must follow strict rules — valid subtractive pairs (IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM), no more than three consecutive identical symbols, and no repetition of V, L, or D. If your input violates these rules, the converter shows the correct form. For example, "IIII" is invalid — the correct form is "IV".

There are exactly six valid subtractive pairs: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400), and CM (900). Only I can precede V and X; only X can precede L and C; only C can precede D and M. All other combinations are additive.

Yes. Simply enter the year as an Arabic number (e.g. 2025) and the converter outputs the Roman numeral (MMXXV). The notable years reference table on the page shows common historical years already converted for quick reference.

The Swap button takes all successfully converted outputs and moves them to the input panel, then switches the conversion direction. This lets you verify a round-trip conversion — convert Arabic to Roman, then swap to convert back to Arabic.

Yes. The tool is 100% free with no signup required, no premium tier, and no usage quotas. Convert Roman numerals as many times as you need directly in your browser.
