Common Use Cases for Character Counter
Twitter / X Posts
Twitter enforces a strict 280-character limit per tweet. Use the character counter to craft punchy posts that stay within the limit without cutting off your message mid-thought.
Instagram Captions
Instagram captions support up to 2,200 characters, but only the first 125 are shown before the "more" truncation. The character counter helps you front-load your key message.
LinkedIn Posts & Articles
LinkedIn posts are capped at 3,000 characters. Professionals use the character counter to write detailed thought-leadership content that stays within the platform limit.
SEO Meta Descriptions
Google displays meta descriptions up to 160 characters in search results. The character counter ensures your meta description is fully visible and not truncated in SERPs.
Email Subject Lines
Most email clients display 60–78 characters of a subject line before truncating. Use the character counter to write subject lines that display fully across all email clients.
SMS & Text Messages
A single GSM-7 SMS is 160 characters; Unicode messages (with emoji) are limited to 70. The character counter shows which limit applies and how many messages your text will use.
Understanding Character Counting
What is a Character Counter?
A character counter is an online tool that measures the length of text in characters, words, sentences, and paragraphs. Unlike a simple word processor word count, a dedicated character counter with platform limits maps your text length against the published limits of social media platforms, SMS, and search engines — giving you instant visual feedback on whether your content fits. Our browser-based character counter processes everything locally, so your text never leaves your device.
How Our Character Counter Works
- Type or Paste Your Text: Enter content directly into the text area or paste from your clipboard. The character counter updates on every keystroke with zero delay.
- View Live Statistics: The stats panel shows character count (with and without spaces), word count, sentence count, paragraph count, line count, estimated reading time, and speaking time — all calculated instantly in your browser.
- Check Platform Limits: Scroll to the platform limits section to see color-coded progress bars for Twitter/X, Instagram, LinkedIn, SMS, meta descriptions, and more. Green means safe, amber means you are approaching the limit (≥90%), and red means you have exceeded it.
What Gets Counted
- Characters (with spaces): Every character including spaces, punctuation, and line breaks. This is the value most platforms use for their character limits.
- Characters (without spaces): Only non-whitespace characters. Useful for measuring content density and comparing text across different languages.
- Words: Tokens separated by whitespace. The character counter uses the same word-splitting logic as most word processors.
- Sentences & Paragraphs: Sentences are detected by terminal punctuation (. ! ?). Paragraphs are separated by blank lines, matching the standard definition used in writing and publishing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Character Counter
A character counter is an online tool that counts the number of characters, words, sentences, and paragraphs in a block of text. Our character counter also shows color-coded platform limit bars for Twitter/X, Instagram, LinkedIn, SMS, meta descriptions, and more — all processed locally in your browser with no server uploads.
Yes. The primary character count includes all characters including spaces, punctuation, and line breaks — because that is how most platforms (Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, SMS) measure text length. We also show a separate "characters without spaces" count for cases where you need to measure content density.
Absolutely. Our character counter runs 100% client-side in your browser. Your text is never sent to any server and never leaves your device. You can safely count characters in confidential drafts, personal notes, and sensitive content without any privacy concerns.
Twitter counts most characters as 1, including letters, numbers, punctuation, and spaces. URLs are always counted as 23 characters regardless of their actual length (due to Twitter's t.co URL shortener). Emoji are typically counted as 2 characters. Our character counter shows the raw character count — for precise Twitter counting with URL and emoji handling, always verify in the Twitter compose window.
Instagram captions support up to 2,200 characters, but the feed view only shows the first 125 characters before adding a "more" link. Our character counter tracks the full 2,200-character limit, but we recommend front-loading your key message and hashtags within the first 125 characters for maximum visibility without requiring a tap.
GSM-7 is the standard SMS encoding that supports 160 characters per message using the basic Latin alphabet and common punctuation. Unicode (UCS-2) encoding is used when your message contains emoji, accented characters, or non-Latin scripts — and it reduces the single-message limit to 70 characters. Our character counter shows both limits so you can see which applies to your message.
No. Since all processing happens locally in your browser, there are no server-side limits. You can count characters in short tweets or long articles. Performance depends on your device, but modern browsers handle very large text inputs smoothly.
Reading time is estimated at 238 words per minute, which is the average silent reading speed for adults according to research. Speaking time is estimated at 130 words per minute, which is a comfortable presentation pace. Both are approximations — actual times vary by reader and content complexity.
Yes. The character counter is 100% free with no signup required, no premium tier, no usage quotas, and no ads blocking the interface. Count characters as many times as you need, directly in your browser.
